Effigy Tumuli︎
Entry Gate
Buffalo Rock State Park, Illinois
Completed at the Illinois Institute of Technology
2012
Perspective of the Journey through the Gate
A series of native grey limestone tunnels used to create a dramatic transition to a series of artistic mounds in central Illinois by artist Michael Heizer. Weaving vertically and laterally through the landscape force the viewer into the gate rather than through the gate. Temporary passes through narrow and dark spaces provide a sense of the site’s former use as a mine and gives a moment to reflect on the act of resource extraction. As the gate rises up, viewers can get to the necessary elevation to observe the Effigy Tumuli.
